Ocean Literacy
Our wonderful school is situated on the seafront edge of the Atlantic Ocean with access to a sandy shore and rocky reef. We aim to enhance the ocean literacy of our students through integrated learning across the curriculum, after-school clubs, and special event days such as Science Week and Ocean Day. Children are immersed in activities designed to foster a deep connection with our local marine environment; empowering them to recognise themselves as citizens of the ocean.
"The future of our planet depends above all on the health of the ocean. This is why it's important for the youngest to be aware and capable of taking action." - Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy in Action
Surveying Life in the Rockpools
Pioneers (Year 5 and 6) carried out a survey of ocean life on our rocky shore. We linked this to our Science learning on living things and how they reproduce. We categorised our finds; thinking about what we already knew about fish and how they reproduce, but also thinking about more unusual creatures such as starfish and anemones. We went back into the classroom and researched the life cycles of some of the creatures that we had discovered.
Research
Carrying out research on what we have discovered.
Fact Sheets
Finding out facts about specific species that we find in the rockpools.
Shore Maps
Drawing a shore map of what might be found on the shore in different areas.
